Registered Massage Therapists (RMTs) are healthcare experts with education in the evaluation and treatment of soft tissue through therapeutic massage. Massage therapists use a mixture of Swedish massage, myofascial release, joint mobilization, trigger point release therapy, deep tissue therapy, neuromuscular therapy, and rehabilitation workout to provide an individualized massage therapy for their patients.

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT DURING A MASSAGE?
In a typical massage therapy session (about 60 minutes long), you unclothe or wear baggy clothing. Unclothe only to the point that you’re comfortable. You will lie on a table and cover yourself with a sheet. Your massage therapist will ensure privacy by leaving the room before and after your massage. Once you are on the table, they will palpate and assess the areas you have indicated as your “problem areas” and determine the most effective treatment plan (i.e. type of massage used and amount of pressure required to achieve a specific treatment outcome).
Your massage therapist may use oil or cream to decrease friction on your skin (i.e. make it more comfortable for you). Tell your massage therapist if you might be sensitive to any particular oils/scents.
If a massage therapist is applying too much pressure, ask for gentler pressure. If they aren’t applying enough pressure, ask for more firm pressure. The benefit of massage therapy is that it can be tailored to your wants and needs. Don’t be shy to let them know what you like and don’t like! If it’s too painful, it’s not worth “pushing through it” – it stresses the body out more and may cause more tightness in the muscles.
